June: Month of Fiesta de San Juan

June is a month of joy and celebration in the Amazon. From the 1st of June until the 24th people in the Amazon, especially in Iquitos, celebrate Fiesta de San Juan wich is a festivity based in a mixture of religious and traditional believes.
During the month, there are several activities like food festivals, tradicional dance and music, fairs and parades. On the 23rd people go to the rivers and bathe, with the belief that Saint John the Baptist has blessed that water and it will purify them. They also celebrate the power of the water; wich is a vital element in all the Amazon jungle. On the 24th there is a religious procession and the “Unsha”, a tradition in wich people dance around a palm tree full of gifts.
